Team Meeting January 29
We've scheduled a TMM/YMCA Adult/Masters swimming meeting for January 29 at
10:30am at New Tampa Y. Open to all that are interested in adult swimming at
the Y - masters, tri-athletes, and fitness swimmers. We want to kick off 2011
with renewed focus and energy, so come loaded with ideas, and some vigor to get
in shape. Don't let those New Year's resolutions go to waste! Topics we are
thinking about:
- Y-Nats team
- TMM growth and development
- Increasing workout attendance/Y program growth
- Y volunteer and contributions
If you are able to make it, great!... Come loaded with ideas, as well as some
thoughts about how you can contribute to adult/masters swimming in Tampa. If
you can't, and have some ideas or are will to help, just drop me a note.
TMM will bring some fortified donuts! They're extra nutritional!
Y-Nats
The latest Y-Nats meet packet is out, and should be posted on
http://tampametromasters.org/ynats.html. The social has now been scheduled.
It is that the Swimming Hall of Fame, right next to the pool. More info will be
coming soon.
Training and Practice Updates
We are proud to announce a new adult/masters swim program at Brandon YMCA!
Vincent Singer is the coach... and a new TMM member. Welcome! They had their
first practice is past Monday morning, and about 10 swimmers participated.
Practice is M, W, F from 6:30 to 7:45 am and then again M. W. F from 6:00 to
7:15 pm. Price is $20 for program members and $35 for non-program members.
The water is nice at New Tampa Y, despite some cold weather and rain. Who ever
is running the pool knows something about swimming! So jump on in!
Coaches Corner
Todays tips, from coach Bruce Young, New Tampa:
Freestyle and Backstroke Turn Questions:
- Where do you finish your swimming?.....before the T
- Where are your hands when you approach the wall?....by the hips, palms
down
- What begins the turn?....a dolphin kick
- What do you do with your head?.....tuck tight
- Where does your head go?....to your hands
- Where do your feet hit the wall?....about a foot deep
- Where are your toes pointing when they hit the wall?.....about a 45
degree angle from straight up
- Where are your toes pointing when you push off the wall?....same place,
45 degree angle from straight up
- What is pushing off the wall like?....jumping off a trampoline
- Where are you looking when you push off the wall?....slightly to the
side
- After the feet leave the wall, what do you do?....streamline, kick swim
- What hand do you pull with first?....the deep arm
Breaststroke and Butterfly Turns
The basic motion of both turns is rotating back, not around.
Go through the 2-1-0-blast-off sequence [works real well with younger swimmers]
(see below.)
- Do we touch with short arms or long arms?.....long arms
- How do we touch the wall?....fingers at water level, shoulders even
- What three things happen after the touch?......head back, elbow to the
side, tuck toward the wall
- What happens first?.....They all happen at the same time
- Where is the head looking?.....up
- What is the countdown?.....2-1-0-Blast-off
- What is the 2?....two hands on the wall
- What is the 1?.....one hand on the wall
- What is the zero?.....nothing on the wall
- What is the blast-off?....feet kick the wall away
- Where are the toes pointing on the blast-off?.....up and slightly to the
side
- Push off on your...side
And don't be taking any short cuts in practice! That means no flip turns on
butterfly! Who would ever do that?!?!?
